Description:

George Lawrence Stone's Stick Control is the original classic, often called the bible of drumming. In 1993, Modern Drummer magazine named the book one of the top 25 books of all-time. In the words of the author, it is the ideal book for improving ''control, speed, flexibility, touch, rhythm, lightness, delicacy, power, endurance, preciseness of execution and muscular coordination,'' with extra attention given to the development of the weak hand. This indispensable book for drummers of all types includes hundreds of basic to advanced-level rhythms, moving through categories of single-beat combinations, triplets, short roll combinations, flam beats, flam triplets and dotted notes, and short roll progressions.

5The ultimate in stick controlSep 04, 2009
I've been using this book for the past 40 years and it continues to challenge my skills. I have yet to find a book that rivals the exercises this book provides.

5Deliberate IntentMar 21, 2009
What distinguishes a truly talented drummer from a mediocre drummer?

Deliberate intent.

Control is part of the title of this book. Control is what the drummer must seek to acquire, to master and to execute. Though the exercises in this book may seem mundane, and even repeat some of the 40 fundamental rudiments, that is precisely the point: deliberate intent; to hit the drum in exactly the way and with exactly the stick you intend. No accidentals here, no serendipity here (though serendipity in the discovery of new and cool stuff is always a bonus!).

Yes, it's "boring" if that's how you choose to approach this. But, no, it is not boring at all, it is a guide into controlling what stick hits the drum, how many times in a row it hits the drum, and to ensure a consistency between left and right starting points so as to create a symmetry of ability, start with the right or the left and you should not suffer weakness in either. Consistent "tone" and volume control so both sticks sound the same attack.

And all must be done in a relaxed, tension free state. Sounds easy... but takes time to master.

I make all my students go through this. I go through this myself.

One exercise I assign is to do a given drill starting slow and even, then slowly speed it up without losing where you are and reverting to something more "comfortable" as you speed up. To ensure this, I encourage accenting the beat note to keep you centered and focused on the signature of the specific drill. While they're all the same note value, the form of the drill, one from another, differs enough to make it necessary as part of the point: deliberate intent.

Got it? Now get this one and start to gain the control you dream about... that you may not even be aware you need.

5In my opinion, the gold standard for developing techniqueJan 19, 2009
I own about 7 different drumming books and this one is by far the best I've ever owned. The author presents a system for training the muscles that is second to none. Drumming technique is all about muscle memory and comprehensive muscle memory training is all about teaching your brain patterns and mastering them one at a time.

This book is immediately accessible for beginners. The exercises are deceptively simple and progress in a perfectly hierarchical manner. Each new exercise builds and expands upon the previous exercise which just enough of a twist to cause your brain to note and learn the distinction. This makes practice easy and progress quick.

I don't know whether it's good or bad, but you can spend months (as I have) working on just the first page! Not because the exercises are tough, but because even the simplest of exercises takes time and devotion to master.

I can think of no more important skills for a drummer to develop than timing accuracy and independence of limbs. If you purchase only one drumming book, and Stick Control is it, you'll still have an extraordinary tool at your disposal.

Follow the directions exactly - how you practice is as important as what you practice

5I wish there were 6 starsJul 17, 2008
This book is the book from which all the others have flowered over the last 2 generations. The book you take on a desert Island. I bought originally at $3.50. Now it is priceless.
